Random Tolkien Fan

Another random fact about me: I LOVE the Lord of the Rings. Aragorn is my fave.

He's one of my desk/office buddies. Lately, he's been hanging out on the shelf next to my friends from The Princess Bride, but he makes little appearances on the desk now and then. Isn't he a cutie?

I LOVE Tolkien's worlds. I read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy prior to seeing any films, unless you count the creepy Hobbit cartoon from the 70's. In fact, my senior literary thesis class was called "Tolkien and Friends." One of the two professors team-teaching (they both resembled hobbits, by the way) had actually MET Tolkien years previous. It was an incredible class. I learned so much about the interpretation of literature and film.

So who's your favorite Tolkien character? Do you have one? Why is that one your fave?

I love Aragorn - both book and movie version, which are quite different - for his honor and strength of character. He's a wonderful fictional hero. And my lil' Aragorn inspires me to write men of valor in my tales of romance!

Aragorn is certainly one of my favorites. Faramir, in the books more than the movie, was a favorite. If I had to pick only one favorite, it would be Sam, for the same reasons that Andrew is my favorite of Christ's apostles. He isn't as flamboyant as his brother Peter, but he's the one who introduced Peter to Christ. He's also the one who brought the boy with the small lunch that Christ used to feed the five thousand. I picture Sam, like Andrew, in the background, quietly doing small things that have great impact.

Speaking of Tolkien, I want to first state that I don't at all consider myself a computer gamer. I am a 60-year-old woman who likes Regency-era books, needlework, tea parties, etc. However, last fall I finally succumbed to my kids' encouragement of several years and started playing Lord of the Rings Online (Lotro). I can't express enough how impressed I am with the game. If one is not impatient, it can be played totally for free, and it doesn't even have ads! The developers have created a wonderfully rich world that is totally faithful to Tolkien's writings, with an engaging storyline. In following the epic quest line, the player is working in the background to aid Aragorn and others. There are also fun side quests, crafting, home ownership (bought with currency earned in game) and decoration, exploring the rich and varied landscapes of Middle Earth, festivals, etc. A Tolkien professor at Oxford uses the game in his teaching, and the developers created a virtual lecture hall for him in Bree. I could enthuse at far greater length, but I'll simply suggest that Tolkien fans check out Lotro.com and Lotro-Wiki.com. Also, if anyone wants to start playing, I recommend the Gladden server, which has the reputation of being for people who just want to enjoy the game and are helpful to other players, rather than people who just want to get ahead as quickly as possible.
